I attended the Improving Birth National Rally for Change two weeks ago on Labor day at the steps of the Texas Capitol. I was so very proud to take part and photograph this empowered group of activists as they took to the streets of Austin. My sister and personal hero Gena Kirby, was the one to speak out for this group to start making a change about birth in the U.S.
The following is from the Improving Birth National Rally for Change FB page-
“We are an organization that believes that birth should be “principle over profit” and where secrecy is trumped by honesty, putting mother’s front & center and squarely in the driver’s seat of their birth choices. Our purpose and cause is about Educating and Empowering mothers so they are able to make informed choices about their birth. We believe in you and your body. We also believe that inductions and c-sections have their place. These can be life saving interventions when necessary.
Our goal is to reduce the elective induction & elective c-section rate in the US by bringing awareness to the birthing families and the people who love them. We will do this by several means. Public events like our National Rally for Change, and coming soon, a documentary about the effects of induction and c-sections on mothers and babies.
Beyond the public awareness campaigns, we will reach out the hospital administrators and ask them to become Partners in Change through the Improving Birth C-Section Reduction Initiative. We will offer evidence supported policy changes, Educational workshops for nurses and doctors and required classes for birthing families, in the risks of elective induction and c-section so they make fully informed choices in their childbirth.”
