I’m always delighted when Gina Giordano contacts me to do head shots for her Doulas in Training. Gina is co-founder of Doula Trainings International. If you have been following my blog then you are certain to know what a Doula is, but if this is your first time visiting then I will let you in on a little secret that is starting to grow rapidly! DOULAS ROCK!!!!
According to DONA- ” The word “doula” comes from the ancient Greek meaning “a woman who serves” and is now used to refer to a trained and experienced professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to the mother before, during and just after birth; or who provides emotional and practical support during the postpartum period.”
Essentially she is your best friend, confidant, cheerleader and guide who will help you through your journey into motherhood. She is there to support you, love and be there for you during and after baby arrives. Aaahhhh. Doesn’t that sound lovely!?
I have had the great fortune to meet some up and coming Doulas. Before I photographed each of these women, I asked them why they wanted to be a Doula. It’s their response that makes their faces light up!
Reminiscing either about their own birth experience and how they wished they had a Doula or how they want to help the next woman so she can feel empowered by what she has accomplished. When each of them spoke of how a Doula has/had touched their lives it is a very powerful moment that I truly enjoy capturing on their faces.
